What I Feel or What I Know?

Rene Descartes is famous for penning the famous existentialist mantra “I think; therefore, I am.” Little did he know, he was not far off from Biblical truth.

In fact just add the one small word “as” to the beginning and it is very Biblical. Proverbs 23:7 teaches us that our thoughts determine who we become and define who we are. “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Reality Falsely Defined

There are several factors we mistakingly allow to define reality for us. Some define reality based on their circumstances. They live life merely reacting the things going on around them. These postmodernists spend each day checking the barometer of events happening around them. Like a barometer, they read the circumstances to determine the pressure of life.

Some define reality based on their emotions – how they feel. Like a thermometer, these romanticists constantly take their emotion temperature and decide what do think and do as a result.

Reality Accurately Defined

I think God has given to us a far greater tool for life – our minds. A barometer and thermometer MEASURE what is going on around us.  However, our minds are like a thermostat that ADJUSTS our emotions and the perception of our circumstances around God’s Word.

I have learned that life is a battle between what I feel and what I KNOW. I need to know the truth about God, His purposes, and His ways.   My thoughts allow me to rise above emotions and circumstance. Consequently, they help me to see that God is at work in these things to mold me and shape me.

Additionally, Philippians 4:8 challenges me to fill my mind with the right kinds of thoughts.  Romans 12:2 reminds me that true transformation is the result of a renewed mind.

Lord, by your grace, please help me keep my thinking pure and focused on you. Help me to think Your thoughts and become who You want me to be.
